Renting bicycles for a day or two to explore locally - is it practical?
I want to cycle around a town or nearby villages for a day. Are bikes easy to rent and safe?

Yes, many guesthouses and small shops rent basic bicycles by the day or half-day, especially in tourist areas like Galle, Weligama, Ella, and around Sigiriya. It's a lovely way to explore at your own pace on quieter roads. Helmets are not always provided so bring your own if safety is a priority. Traffic can be challenging on main roads, so stick to smaller lanes and paths. Early morning or late afternoon is best. It's very affordable and a nice change from tuk-tuks or walking.
I rented one in Galle for a day and cycled around the fort and nearby villages. It was great. Just be careful on the busier roads.
