Legally, tea estates are private property owned by massive corporations. However, there is a cultural tolerance for tourists walking on the established dirt tractor paths. The strict rule is: NEVER walk directly through the tea bushes themselves, as this damages the valuable crops. Stick to the dirt roads. If an estate manager or security guard asks you to turn back, apologize and leave immediately.
Also, if there is a gate with a lock or a strict No Entry sign, respect it. Some estates have restricted processing areas.
Do not pick the tea leaves yourself as a souvenir. It is considered theft and deeply disrespectful to the workers.
If you see tea pluckers working, it is polite to ask them "Ok" and point to the path. They almost always smile and nod yes.
