Safely storing food from leopards in remote hill country homestays

Yes, it is a legitimate risk. The Sri Lankan leopard thrives in the highland tea estates, often hunting wild boars and stray dogs at night. Leaving cooked meat, bones, or strong-smelling food waste outside your homestay room will attract them directly to the property. Always give your food waste back to the host for secure, sealed disposal indoors.
Leopards are naturally shy and avoid humans, but an easy meal of discarded BBQ meat might overcome their fear. Do not risk it.
It is also to keep away the wild boars. A massive wild boar tearing through the garden trash at 2 AM is terrifying.
If you bring your own snacks, keep them in sealed Tupperware inside your backpack. Do not leave wrappers on the balcony.
The homestay dogs will usually bark wildly if a leopard gets close, giving you plenty of warning to stay inside.
