Our hostel group wants to bring Arrack and speakers to a waterfall near Nuwara Eliya for a day party. Are there strict laws against drinking at public waterfalls.

Yes, public consumption of alcohol is technically illegal in Sri Lanka, and local police actively patrol popular waterfalls (like Ramboda or Lovers Leap) to enforce this. Many drownings occur due to drunk tourists and locals slipping on rocks. If caught, police will confiscate the alcohol and fine you. Keep it to private, hidden spots or wait until you get to a registered bar.

Just hike sober, enjoy the waterfall, and save the Arrack for dinner when you get back to your guesthouse.

If you bring glass bottles of Arrack and smash them on the rocks, you ruin the spot for everyone. Stick to cans if you absolutely must.

It is also highly disrespectful to the locals who use the lower pools for bathing and washing clothes. Keep the parties on the beaches where it belongs.
