We rented a scooter and are staying near Minneriya. Is it safe to drive on the main roads around the park at dusk after our safari finishes.

Absolutely NOT. Do not drive a scooter around Minneriya or Habarana at dusk or at night. This area is a massive elephant corridor. Wild elephants frequently cross or stand in the middle of the dark highways. They are incredibly difficult to see until you are right on top of them, and they are easily startled by headlights. Use a tuk-tuk or a car after sunset.

The local buses also speed down those dark roads like crazy. It is a death trap on a scooter.

We saw a massive tusker standing right on the white line of the highway. A scooter would have crashed straight into it.
