We are booking a whale tour in Mirissa. How do we know if the boat is operating ethically and safely, and what rules should they follow.

Ethical operators (like Raja and the Whales) strictly follow international guidelines. They must stay 100 meters away from the whales, reduce speed to a no-wake zone when approaching, never approach from head-on or directly behind, and never surround the animal with other boats. If your captain starts revving the engine to chase a diving whale, they are breaking the law.

We used Geeth Whale Watching and they were incredibly respectful. Even turned the engine completely off.

Do not trust the guys selling tickets on the beach. Book online or through a reputable hotel.

Yes, take a photo of the boat registration number and report it to the Coast Guard at the harbor.

Also, check if the boat has proper life jackets for everyone. The cheap boats often do not.
