I love an aerial perspective and I have heard you can take a microlight flight over the cultural triangle seeing Sigiriya and the tanks and the dagobas from above How does this work where does it fly from is it safe and weather dependent what do you actually see and is June with the monsoon a workable time or all grounded How does it compare to the seaplane and a drone (which I gather is restricted) Honest take on the little plane flights please

Microlight pilot in the cultural triangle so the straight answer How it works microlight (light sport aircraft) scenic flights operate from an airfield in the cultural triangle area you go up with a pilot in a two seat microlight for a scenic loop of varying length over the region it is an open or semi open little aircraft low and slow which is exactly what makes the views intimate What you see the spectacular bit Sigiriya rock from the air (the water gardens and the whole layout revealed as no ground view can) the patchwork of paddy and the ancient TANKS glinting the dagobas the jungle the village mosaic the dry zone laid out below it is a genuinely breathtaking perspective on the cultural triangle landscape Safe and weather dependent reputable operators fly with licensed pilots and maintained aircraft and safety briefings AND microlights are very weather sensitive they fly in calm clear conditions usually EARLY morning when the air is smooth wind rain and turbulence ground them so flights are dawn slots and weather permitting always June and the monsoon honest the cultural triangle is dry zone so it fares better than the wet southwest in June BUT mornings can still bring cloud and the monsoon brings unsettled air so June flying is possible but MORE likely to be delayed or rescheduled for weather book early in your stay so you have backup mornings if the first is scrubbed and treat a clear flight as somewhat weather dependent Versus the seaplane and drone the seaplane (Cinnamon Air type) is point to point transport with a view in an enclosed plane the microlight is purely a low slow scenic JOY flight a different intimate experience the drone is heavily restricted especially over the heritage sites (the drone threads no fly over Sigiriya and the ancient cities) so the microlight is actually the LEGAL way to get the aerial shot of the cultural triangle you cannot legally drone it but you can fly over it with a licensed operator The verdict worth it for the aerial lover a genuinely special perspective on Sigiriya and the tank country book a dawn slot early in your stay for weather backup accept the monsoon weather dependence and it is the legal and breathtaking way to see the cultural triangle from above

For a photographer the microlight is the answer to the no drones over Sigiriya rule the low slow open aircraft at dawn gives shots a drone never could legally get book the earliest smoothest air slot

The legal way to get the aerial shot you cannot drone over the heritage sites is the point that sells it dawn slot booked early for weather backup Sigiriya from above thank you for the honest weather caveat

Following up the operator confirmed they refund or reschedule if weather grounds the flight worth checking that policy in monsoon season so a scrubbed dawn does not cost you
