We are driving from Ella to Diyaluma Falls. The main upper pools get so crowded with Instagrammers. Are there secret side pools that locals use.

Yes. Most tourists hike from Poonagala straight down to the main cliff edge. Instead, when you reach the first river crossing, hike UPSTREAM about 20 minutes into the jungle. There is a secondary set of falls and deep, cold rock pools that are almost always completely empty. A local guide can show you the trail for 1500 LKR.

We did this! It was incredible. We had a massive natural infinity pool all to ourselves for hours.

Be aware of leeches if you hike upstream into the thick brush.

Awesome, we will definitely hire a local kid to show us the way upstream.
