The classic dilemma Sigiriya the famous rock fortress with the frescoes and the lion paws and the steep price or Pidurangala the cheaper neighbour you climb for the BEST view which happens to be OF Sigiriya Budget conscious but I do not want to miss something essential Can I do both which for sunrise which for the archaeology is Sigiriya worth its high foreigner ticket and what is the realistic plan for doing both well in one cultural triangle morning

Ticketing officer at the site so the honest decision without the sales pitch They are different experiences not substitutes Sigiriya is the archaeology the fifth century royal citadel atop the rock the water gardens the boulder gardens the mirror wall the famous frescoes of the maidens the lion paw staircase the summit palace ruins it is a UNESCO world wonder and the climb IS the history Pidurangala is the VIEW a rough scramble up the neighbouring rock through a forest monastery and a boulder squeeze to a summit whose entire reward is the sweeping vista WITH Sigiriya rising from the jungle in the frame you cannot photograph Sigiriya from Sigiriya so Pidurangala is where the iconic shot of the rock comes from The honest ticket truth Sigiriya foreigner entry is genuinely expensive among the priciest tickets in the country and the dual pricing debate is real (the conservation funding argument applies the revenue maintains the frescoes and the site) Pidurangala costs a small fraction a modest temple donation tier The do both plan and it is the best plan Pidurangala for SUNRISE climb in the dark with a headtorch reach the top for first light over Sigiriya and the dawn jungle the cheaper rock gives the better sunrise then descend and enter SIGIRIYA when its gates open for the archaeology and the frescoes climbing it before the mid morning heat and crowds You get the iconic view at dawn cheaply and the world heritage experience after each doing what it does best Is Sigiriya worth its price for the history and the once in a lifetime yes do not skip the citadel to save money having come this far but Pidurangala is not the consolation prize it is the photograph The realistic timing Pidurangala 0500 start down by 0730 Sigiriya 0730 entry climbed by 1000 ahead of the worst heat both rocks one morning the complete twin experience

The Pidurangala scramble has a genuine rock squeeze near the top hands needed not a walk wear proper shoes not the flip flops half the sunrise crowd arrives in

Heat warning from the sun thread both rocks before mid morning is not just crowd avoidance the Sigiriya staircase and the Pidurangala scramble are brutal in midday sun the dawn double is the cool option too
