We did not even know it was on. Today is 21 August. Hotels in Kandy look insane. Do we need a paid grandstand or can we just stand on the street? Which nights are left that are actually good?

You did not miss it. Tonight is the 4th Kumbal, about 06:40 PM. Tomorrow 5th Kumbal ~06:28. Randoli starts 23rd, bigger costumes, 27th is the one people fly in for, 06:43 PM. Day Perahera 28th afternoon. Street along the lake / Dalada Veediya is free, locals sit from mid-afternoon. Roads close around 17:30. Paid seats (municipal stands, hotel galleries) do sell out. If booking.com is empty, stay 10-15 min tuk out (Peradeniya, Katugastota) and ride in before 5.

We stood free on the 20th. Got there 4:30, bought a plastic stool, it started around 7. It rains. Poncho beats umbrella, you will poke someone.
