Buried in a trip report I found mention of government bungalows INSIDE the national parks run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation Not the luxury tented camps on the boundary actual basic bungalows at waterholes deep inside Wilpattu and Yala where you stay overnight with a caretaker How does booking actually work as a foreigner what do they cost what do you bring and is the experience worth the bureaucracy

Thirty years working these parks so let me explain the system properly The DWC operates basic bungalows inside Wilpattu Yala Udawalawe Gal Oya and Horton Plains plus designated campsites Each bungalow sits at a prime location Wilpattu ones overlook villus where animals drink at dawn meters from your veranda Booking reality reservations open at DWC head office in Battaramulla and through the dwc gov lk reservation portal demand for weekends and holiday weeks clears months ahead weekday slots in off months are very gettable Foreigner rates run notably higher than local rates expect roughly 100 to 150 USD per night for the bungalow (sleeps 8 to 10 so split between a group it is reasonable) plus park entry plus a service charge for the keeper What you bring everything consumable all food drinking water linen is usually provided but confirm The resident keeper cooks what you bring surprisingly well hand him the rice the vegetables and a chicken and dinner appears Worth the bureaucracy completely There is nothing in Sri Lankan tourism like drinking tea at 0530 while a leopard walks the far side of your villu No fences no other vehicles until the day jeeps enter hours later

Do the campsites work the same way Or are those for organised groups only

Stayed at a Yala Block 2 bungalow in March through a local agent who handled the Battaramulla paperwork for a 5000 LKR service fee Worth every rupee versus chasing the booking myself from abroad

Pack out every scrap of waste the keepers grade guests and repeat bookings from your agent get easier if your group leaves the place spotless

Same booking channel different product campsites are cleared riverside plots you bring or rent full camping kit and a registered campsite operator usually handles logistics For first timers the bungalow is the easier and frankly better experience
