We want a raw cultural experience. Can tourists actually stay in the "line rooms" where the tea pluckers live in Haputale, or is that invasive.

It is becoming a popular form of community-based tourism! Several NGOs and local cooperatives have helped estate families upgrade a spare room in their line houses specifically for tourists. It provides them with crucial direct income. It is very basic (cold water, outdoor toilets), but it is not invasive if you book through the proper community channels. You will eat with the family and learn about their lives.

School supplies or small toys for the children are always deeply appreciated.

The fresh roti and strong estate tea they make you for breakfast makes it 100% worth it.

It gets freezing cold in those tin-roof rooms at night. Bring a heavy sleeping bag or thermal layers.
