Staying with indigenous Vedda community in Gal Oya eating traditional food
4 Answers from travellers
You cannot directly "homestay" inside the traditional Vedda dwellings, as they preserve their privacy. However, eco-lodges like Gal Oya Lodge arrange respectful cultural visits. The Chief will often demonstrate how they forage. Traditional foods include wild honey, yams, and manioc cooked over open fires, though they usually do not serve full meals to tourists to preserve their limited resources.
Make sure your visit is arranged through ethical channels. You do not want to participate in "human zoo" style tours.
If they offer you wild honey straight from the comb, accept it! It is incredibly pure and tastes like the jungle flowers.
The Gal Oya boat safari is right next door. It is the only place in Sri Lanka where you can see elephants swimming between islands.
