The iconic stick fishermen photo of Sri Lanka is everywhere on Instagram I want to shoot it but I read that most stick fishermen are now just posing for photographers at 1500 LKR per click and real fishing collapsed after the 2004 tsunami Is there anywhere genuine stick fishing still happens or is this entirely a tourist performance now

Honest answer from coast 95 percent of what tourists see now is staged Real stick fishing practiced for centuries did decline after the 2004 tsunami fishing stocks collapsed and the traditional poles were destroyed What remains today between Koggala and Ahangama is mostly former fishermen earning livelihood by posing 1500 to 2500 LKR per session They climb up at sunrise or sunset hold a fishing pose and tourists shoot This is essentially performative cultural tourism Some genuine stick fishing still happens early morning roughly 0500 to 0530 at remote beaches further east toward Tangalle and Hambantota But it is rare and irregular not photogenic golden hour Ethics If you want the photo pay the fee fairly and respect that they are people earning a living You are buying a performance not stealing a moment Do not haggle aggressively the posing tradition keeps the visual heritage alive

If you do shoot the staged stick fishermen at least talk to them ask their name listen to their actual story your photograph then becomes a document not extraction

Confirmed by Steve McCurry himself in a 2018 interview that some of his stick fishermen photographs were arranged setups Even legendary photographers paid for the visual

For something more authentic photograph the real fishing scene at Negombo lagoon at dawn outrigger canoes pulling in nets unstaged daily
