Guide and animal lover so the balanced picture The reality the street dogs are part of life here mostly community dogs that are fed and tolerated by neighbourhoods generally placid and used to people during the day they doze in the shade and ignore you most are not aggressive and locals coexist with them peacefully so the daytime dog is usually a non issue The risks to respect rabies is present in the animal population (the health threads) so a bite or even a scratch from a stray means the post exposure protocol and a prompt doctor visit and dogs can be more territorial or pack bold at NIGHT a lone dog by day is relaxed a pack at night near their patch can be different so the genuine cautions are night and packs and any sick or scared animal Should you pet them I know you want to the honest advice is be cautious a calm friendly community dog that approaches you gently in daylight a gentle back of the hand and reading its body language is a personal choice many travellers do BUT avoid petting any dog that is fearful sick injured a mother with pups or part of a wary pack and never corner or startle one and wash and watch any scratch the rabies risk means a bite is not just a bite here so affection with real caution Handling them safely if a dog or pack is aggressive or following do not run or scream (it triggers chase) stop stay calm do not make direct threatening eye contact back away slowly and put something (a bag a bike) between you picking up a stone or even miming it often makes a threatening dog back off (the local move) at night carry a light and stick to busier lit routes The kind thing carry nothing you must protect from a hungry dog do not feed then abandon expectations support the local animal welfare groups doing sterilisation and vaccination if you want to help and a bowl of water in the heat is a kindness The balance enjoy the gentle daytime community dogs with gentle caution avoid the night packs and any unwell animal treat a bite or scratch seriously with a doctor and you can be both kind and safe
Gentle with the calm daytime community dogs wary of night packs and any sick animal and treat any bite or scratch seriously with a doctor this is the neither cruel nor reckless balance I wanted supporting the welfare groups is the way to help thank you
