I want to climb the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress before sunrise for a quiet meditation session. Are the ancient stairs safe to climb in the dark, and what is the history of this site.

Yapahuwa was briefly the capital of Sri Lanka in the 13th century and housed the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is far less crowded than Sigiriya, making it perfect for meditation. However, the ornamental stone staircase leading to the palace ruins is incredibly steep and the treads are very narrow. Climbing it in the dark is very dangerous. Wait until there is enough morning twilight to see your footing clearly.

The view from the top overlooking the jungle canopy is deeply spiritual. Just be aware that macaques live on the rock, so do not take any food up there with you while you meditate.
