We are driving up the East Coast searching for empty surf breaks Are there any military rules or restricted beaches we should avoid

While the East Coast is mostly open now, there are still a few active naval bases near Trincomalee and north of Batticaloa. If you see signs that say "High Security Zone" or military checkpoints, simply turn around. Do not attempt to fly a drone anywhere near these areas or your equipment will be confiscated immediately.

Always ask local fishermen if the water is safe. Some untouched beaches have brutal rip currents.

Yes, NEVER swim in the still lagoons that empty into the ocean. Stick strictly to the crashing surf.

If you surf near Lighthouse point, be respectful of the tiny local community there.

Also, south of Arugam Bay near Okanda is a National Park buffer zone. Surfing is allowed, but do not set up camp or start fires on those beaches.
