Yes, hike towards Kithal Ella waterfall. It is located deep in the jungle right off the railway tracks on the way to Ella Rock. Very few tour groups go there. The cascade is smaller, but you can set up a tripod on the rocks easily without being bumped into. The pool is also much safer for swimming than Ravana.
It is under heavy canopy, so it is quite dark. Perfect for long exposures actually.
Secret Waterfall is another good one. Ask a local tuk-tuk driver to take you to the trailhead.
Bring mosquito spray and watch out for leeches. The jungle there is thick and damp.

People outside stations offer to "help" buy tickets but charge large markups. They may buy cheap third-class tickets and sell as more expensive classes.
