We are staying near Goyambokka in Tangalle. The beaches are empty and beautiful, but are they actually safe for casual swimming.

The beaches east of Tangalle (like Marakolliya and Rekawa) are notoriously dangerous. The shelf drops off steeply, creating massive shore breaks and hidden, deadly rip currents that pull straight out to the deep ocean. There are no lifeguards. Goyambokka is slightly protected by rocks, but you should never swim past waist-deep water on that coastline.

Many tourists drown every year ignoring local warnings. If the red flags are up, or if locals say "no swim", listen to them.

If you want safe swimming in Tangalle, go to the natural rock pool at Parewella Beach or Silent Beach. They are shielded from the main waves.
