The coastal train Colombo to Galle and Matara is the seaside railway worth it over the expressway
Everyone raves about the Kandy to Ella hill train but the COASTAL line south from Colombo to Galle and on to Matara runs right along the ocean which sounds magical Is it worth taking over the faster expressway bus or car which side do I sit how crowded does it get and is it the famous train that runs almost in the waves I want the seaside rail romance if it delivers Rail and coast people please advise

Coastal line commuter so the seaside rail truth Is it worth it for the romance yes it is a genuinely different and lovely experience from the hill train where the hill train gives you tea and mist the coastal line gives you the OCEAN for long stretches south of Colombo the track runs meters from the water past fishing villages palm fringed beaches and the waves the section around Hikkaduwa and the approach to Galle is the postcard the train threading between the road and the sea and yes it is the line famous for running right along the shoreline Which side sit on the RIGHT side travelling south (Colombo toward Galle and Matara) that is the sea side the left is the inland road side it makes all the difference grab a right window or stand at the right side door Crowds honest it is a working commuter and intercity line so it gets busy especially the Colombo end and rush hours the reserved seats on the intercity services are the comfortable option for the through journey the slower stopping trains are more crowded and more local but more atmospheric Versus the expressway the Southern Expressway bus or car is far FASTER (Colombo to Galle in about two hours versus the train taking longer with stops) so this is a romance versus speed choice take the train for the journey itself the sea breeze the doorway view the coastal life and the expressway when you just need to get there The sweet plan take the coastal train at least once for the Colombo to Galle stretch ideally not at peak crowding sit right side window down and use the expressway for the return or the legs where time matters the sea train is the experience the expressway is the transport
The romance versus speed framing is the right call took the train down for the views and the expressway bus back when I just wanted to be there both have their place
Guesthouse host the Galle to Matara continuation past Weligama and toward Mirissa keeps the sea views going do not stop at Galle if you are heading my way the whole southern coast line is lovely
Right side travelling south for the sea and take it for the journey not the speed this is exactly the seaside romance I hoped for the train famous for running by the waves delivers thank you
