The Tamil South Indian style breakfast dosa idli vadai sambar where do I find this and how is it different from the Sinhala breakfast
I love a savoury breakfast and alongside the Sinhala breakfast (hoppers string hoppers) I keep seeing DOSA IDLI VADAI and sambar the South Indian Tamil style breakfast Where do I find these (the Tamil eateries the tea kades the north and the hill country tea towns) what exactly are they how do you eat them (with sambar and chutney) and how is this breakfast different from the Sinhalese one I want to try the full range of breakfasts here Food lovers and locals please tell me about the Tamil breakfast

Northern cook so the Tamil South Indian breakfast a delicious world The dishes DOSAI (dosa) a thin crispy savoury crepe made from a fermented rice and lentil batter golden and crisp (the plain one) or stuffed (the masala dosa with a spiced potato filling) eaten by tearing pieces and dipping IDLI soft fluffy steamed savoury rice and lentil cakes (round and white) mild and spongy soaking up the accompaniments VADAI (vadai) savoury fried lentil fritters (the doughnut shaped ulundu vadai crisp outside soft inside or the masala vadai) STRING HOPPERS and PITTU feature too (shared with the Sinhala table) How you eat them with the ACCOMPANIMENTS this is key they come with SAMBAR (a tangy spiced lentil and vegetable broth you dip into or pour over) and CHUTNEYS (coconut chutney the fresh white one tomato or other chutneys) and sometimes a curry you dip tear and combine the crisp dosa or soft idli with the sambar and chutneys a wonderful mix of textures and flavours How it differs from the Sinhala breakfast the SINHALA breakfast leans to HOPPERS (appa) STRING HOPPERS milk rice (kiribath) pol sambol and the coconut and rice based items the TAMIL South Indian breakfast centres on DOSA IDLI VADAI with SAMBAR and CHUTNEY (the fermented rice and lentil based items) they overlap (string hoppers pittu are shared) but the dosa idli sambar set is the distinctly South Indian Tamil side it is lighter fermented and comes with that lovely sambar and chutney spread Where to find it TAMIL eateries and the South Indian style restaurants (look for places advertising dosai and idli) the NORTH (Jaffna) and the EAST and crucially the HILL COUNTRY TEA TOWNS (Nuwara Eliya Hatton and the up country where there is a large Tamil community the estate Tamil population) and Tamil neighbourhoods everywhere (Colombo has great South Indian spots) the dedicated dosa and idli places are common a busy Tamil breakfast spot is the place to go So try the Tamil South Indian breakfast crispy DOSAI soft IDLI and savoury VADAI eaten with tangy SAMBAR and fresh coconut CHUTNEY a lighter fermented contrast to the hopper based Sinhala breakfast find it at Tamil eateries and South Indian restaurants especially in the north the east the hill country tea towns and Tamil neighbourhoods enjoy the full breakfast range of the island
The hill country tea towns are a great place to try it the large estate Tamil community means excellent dosa and idli spots in places like Nuwara Eliya and Hatton so you can pair a cool hill morning with a hot crispy masala dosa and sambar a lovely upcountry breakfast
Crispy dosai soft idli and savoury vadai eaten with tangy sambar and coconut chutney a lighter fermented contrast to the hopper based Sinhala breakfast found at Tamil eateries especially in the north the east and the hill country tea towns this is exactly the breakfast range I wanted to explore thank you
The masala dosa is my favourite the crisp crepe wrapped around spiced potato with the sambar and chutney is a perfect savoury breakfast if you only try one dosa make it the masala one it is satisfying and full of flavour
