I am planning a deep south safari base and Tissamaharama (Tissa) keeps coming up as the hub Is Tissa the right base for the deep south what can I reach from there (Yala Bundala Kataragama the southeast) what is the town itself like (the big tank the temples) how many nights should I base there and is it better than basing right at a park gate and is June okay for this dry southeast corner People who based in Tissa please tell me if it is the right hub

Deep south guide so the Tissa as a base picture Is it the right hub YES Tissamaharama (Tissa) is the classic and sensible BASE for the deep southeast it sits perfectly placed for the regions big draws with a good range of accommodation (guesthouses to nice hotels) and the tourist infrastructure (safari operators eateries) so it is the natural hub for this corner What you reach from Tissa YALA NATIONAL PARK the famous leopard park is close (the main entrance is a short drive so Tissa is the prime base for a Yala safari early morning starts are easy the Yala threads) BUNDALA NATIONAL PARK the superb birding park (wetlands flamingos) is very near (the Bundala threads) KATARAGAMA the major multi faith pilgrimage town and temple complex is just up the road (easy evening or day visit the Kataragama threads) the southeast coast and the area sites are all in reach so from Tissa you can do Yala Bundala and Kataragama which is a brilliant cluster The town itself TISSA is a pleasant town built around a huge ancient TANK (the Tissa Wewa a beautiful reservoir lovely at sunrise and sunset with birdlife) and it has ancient DAGOBAS and ruins (Tissamaharama was an ancient royal and monastic centre so there is real history the great Tissa dagoba) it is a calm agreeable base not just a service town How many nights 2 to 3 nights works well enough for a Yala safari (a morning) a Bundala birding trip a Kataragama visit and the town tank and ruins do not just dash in for one night give it a couple to enjoy the cluster Better than basing at a park gate generally YES Tissa gives you choice (food accommodation operators) and access to ALL the area highlights (not just one park) basing right at a remote gate limits you to that park and has fewer amenities Tissa as a hub lets you mix Yala Bundala Kataragama and the town so it is more flexible and comfortable (some splurge on a lodge near Yala for the wilderness immersion but Tissa is the practical all rounder base) June and the dry southeast GOOD this southeast corner is in the DRIER zone and June is generally a reasonable time here (the southwest monsoon hits the west and hills hardest while the southeast is drier the seasonal threads) note Yala traditionally has an annual closure period (often around the driest months) so CHECK Yala is open for your dates (Bundala and Kataragama remain) so yes base in Tissamaharama for the deep south it is the ideal hub for Yala Bundala and Kataragama with a pleasant ancient tank town to enjoy stay 2 to 3 nights it beats a single park gate for flexibility and comfort and June is a decent dry season time for the southeast just confirm Yala park opening for your dates

Watch the Yala annual closure the main block traditionally shuts for a period in the dry season so always check the dates if Yala is your priority Bundala is a wonderful birding alternative that stays open and from Tissa you have both plus Kataragama so the base still works
