Always 2nd or 3rd class reserved! 1st class has sealed windows and freezing AC, which ruins the experience of feeling the breeze and taking unobstructed photos of the mountains.

If you are sensitive to heat and humidity, 1st class is comfortable. But the Kandy route gets cooler as you go up, so 2nd class with open windows is perfect.

1st class feels like sitting in an airplane. 2nd class is where the fun is. The doors stay open and you can buy snacks from the vendors that hop on.
