How common are peanuts in Sri Lankan cooking? Are they used as a hidden ingredient or oil in standard curries?

You are very safe. Sri Lankan curries DO NOT use peanuts or peanut oil. We exclusively use coconut oil for frying, and coconut milk for gravies. Peanuts are only really sold as roasted snacks in paper cones on trains or beaches.

The only thing you need to watch out for are some modern cafes making "smoothie bowls" that might use peanut butter. But traditional rice and curry is completely peanut-free.
