Culture host who hosts many older travellers so the comfortable senior approach Manageable absolutely Sri Lanka is very doable and rewarding for an older traveller with the right pace and the famous Sri Lankan warmth means you get help and kindness everywhere the key is pacing and the right support The car and driver YES this is the single best decision for an older traveller a private car and driver (the car and driver threads) removes the hardest parts the long drives are done in comfort with stops you avoid the crowded buses and trains for transfers (do ONE scenic train leg for the joy not for slogging luggage) the driver helps with bags knows the easy access points and becomes your guide and helper it transforms the trip Pacing for comfort the golden rule fewer bases longer stays slow down pick three or four comfortable bases and day trip gently rather than a new hotel every night the constant packing and driving is the real fatigue build in rest days and midday breaks for the heat Heat real pace around it mornings and late afternoons for activity midday rest hydrate choose accommodation with AC and a pool a gentle rhythm beats the heat Sites and uneven ground adapt freely you do NOT have to climb Sigiriya (Pidurangala is also steep) enjoy the rock from below or choose the gentler sites the cultural triangle has plenty viewable with easy walking many sites have uneven ancient ground so good shoes a walking pole and your driver helping over the rough bits and skipping the hardest climbs is fine see what you can comfortably do Toilets carry tissue and sanitiser use the hotel and good restaurant Western toilets (the public toilet threads) plan around them western toilets are common in tourist places Healthcare reassuring YES the private hospitals in Colombo Kandy Galle are good and affordable (the healthcare threads) carry your medications and prescriptions travel insurance that covers your age and any conditions is ESSENTIAL confirm it know the nearest good private hospital to each base so the plan a private car and driver fewer bases and a slow pace midday rest in the heat adapt and skip the hardest climbs without guilt good shoes and a pole solid insurance and you have a comfortable wonderful trip the warmth here looks after older travellers beautifully
One more do one scenic train leg (the Kandy to Ella hills) as a sit down highlight booked in a reserved seat but let the driver carry the luggage and meet you so you enjoy the ride without the platform scramble the best of both
Solo at seventy is genuinely fine here the warmth means you are never really alone the guesthouse families and the driver look out for you it is one of the gentler destinations for an older solo traveller
My parents in their seventies did exactly this a driver three comfortable bases and a gentle pace and they managed beautifully the no guilt about skipping the Sigiriya climb point freed them to enjoy what they could do
The carry tissue and use the hotel and restaurant toilets point is a practical relief to hear thank you and the reassurance on the private hospitals settles my main worry I will sort the insurance carefully
A private car and driver fewer bases a slow pace midday rest and skip the hardest climbs without guilt this is exactly the help not the talking out of it that I wanted the driver as helper and guide sounds the key thank you
