Yes, any dog bite in Sri Lanka is a major health concern due to rabies. Do not panic, but act immediately. Wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 solid minutes. Then, take a tuktuk directly to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle or the Matara General Hospital. Both are large government hospitals that provide the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccine for free.

I got scratched in Weligama and went to Matara hospital. The staff was incredibly efficient. Just bring your passport.

Do not rely on small private clinics in Ahangama for this. They often do not stock the Human Rabies Immunoglobulin (HRIG) you might need.
