I want to do long-exposure photography of the Gal Vihara statues in Polonnaruwa. Do I need a special permit to use a tripod inside the archaeological site.

For personal photography with a standard tripod, your standard entrance ticket is usually sufficient. However, commercial shoots or massive lighting rigs require a permit from the Central Cultural Fund. The main rule at Gal Vihara is that you CANNOT pose in front of the statues with your back turned to them. The guards will intervene immediately if you do.

If you set up a tripod, make sure it is not blocking the walking path for pilgrims making offerings.

Do not use a flash on the statues either. It is disrespectful and frowned upon.
