A tuk tuk driver in Colombo told us the meter is legally only for Sri Lankan citizens and tourists have to pay flat rates. Is this a new rule.

This is an absolute lie and a very common scam. The metered rate applies to all passengers by law, regardless of nationality. If a driver refuses to use the meter or makes up fake rules, immediately get out and find another one, or use the PickMe app to ensure a fair digital rate.

I just point at the meter before getting in. If they shake their head, I walk away. Do not even argue with them.

Threatening to call the tourist police (1912) usually makes them turn the meter on instantly.
