Family planner who books the unusual so the memorable stays roundup The treehouses genuine tree and stilt cabins exist around the cultural triangle edges and near the wildlife areas some rustic some surprisingly comfortable sleeping among the canopy with the birds and sometimes wild elephants passing below the eco lodge treehouses near the parks are a highlight Cave and rock stays there are boutique properties built into and around the great boulders especially in the cultural triangle and Kandy hills where rooms nestle under rock overhangs dramatic and cool The lighthouse and the colonial conversions the south coast has characterful conversions and the restored colonial bungalows (the tea bungalows in the hills the Dutch villas in Galle Fort from the other threads) are unique stays in themselves Tented safari camps near the parks (Yala Wilpattu Gal Oya) luxury tented camps put you under canvas in the wild comfortable beds and the sounds of the night a brilliant safari base Eco cabins and paddy field stays mud and wattle eco huts cabins over or beside the paddy and the lake and the off grid jungle hideaways for the back to nature stay The water and unusual the stilt and lake cabins the converted boats and the jungle domes keep appearing as boutique offerings grow Comfortable or rough BOTH exist read carefully the boutique treehouse and tented camp can be genuinely luxurious (proper bed bathroom good food) the rustic eco hut is deliberately simple (bucket wash open air) decide which you want and read the specific property the word eco can mean luxury or basic Worth building a route around YES this is a lovely way to plan instead of generic hotels string together a treehouse near a park a tea bungalow in the hills a Galle Fort villa a tented safari camp and an eco cabin by a lake and the STAYS become the trip not just the bed The approach pick two or three signature unique stays as anchors (a tented camp a treehouse a tea bungalow) book those first they fill and plan the route around them the memorable places to sleep are half the magic here

The read the word eco carefully warning is gold it meant luxury at one place and a mud hut with a bucket at another both wonderful but know which you booked

The treehouse near a park with wild elephants passing below was unforgettable just check the comfort level some are rustic with bucket washes and open walls which is part of the charm if you expect it
