I want to understand the lives of tea workers. Is there a respectful way to visit villages or is it intrusive?

It can be done respectfully through organized community visits or with a trusted local guide who has relationships in the villages. Randomly walking into 'lines' (worker housing) uninvited can feel intrusive. Some tea estates and NGOs run responsible tourism programs where part of the fee goes to community projects and visitors can meet workers in a structured, consensual way. Always go with someone who speaks the language and understands the context. Purely observational 'poverty tourism' is not appropriate.

The best experiences often come from talking to pluckers you meet on the estates during a normal factory tour, rather than staged village visits. Many are happy to chat briefly if approached respectfully.
