Is visiting the indigenous Vedda community respectful and authentic, or does it feel like a staged human zoo?

It is a complex issue. The Dambana village has become quite commercialized to survive. They will perform traditional dances and show fire-making for a fee. While it helps them economically, it can feel a bit staged to Western tourists. If you go, hire a knowledgeable guide to translate so you can actually converse with the chief rather than just taking photos.

We visited and it felt a bit uncomfortable, like a performance. I would probably skip it unless you have a deep anthropological interest and a good translator.
