There is a small Buddhist shrine near the road at the Midigama surf break. Should we take off our hats or lower our surfboards when walking past it on the way to the water.

It is a wonderful gesture of respect to remove your hat or cap as you walk past any Buddha statue or shrine, even the small roadside ones. While you do not need to drop your surfboard, carrying it quietly without being rowdy shows you respect the local culture. The locals notice and deeply appreciate tourists who observe these small customs.

I always just pause for a second and nod my head. It sets a good, calm intention before paddling out to the reef anyway.

Do not turn your back to the statue to take a selfie with it either. Always face it or stand sideways if you are taking a photo near it.

Also, never lean your surfboard against the glass or the pedestal of the shrine while you wait for friends.
