Locals at Ravana falls are demanding money to show us the safe pools. Is it a scam.

The waterfall guide scam is very prevalent at Ravana Falls. Local young men will approach tourists offering to guide them up the slippery rocks to supposedly safer, hidden upper pools, claiming it is too dangerous to navigate alone.

To avoid this, absolutely refuse any help climbing the rocks. The lower pools accessible directly from the main highway bridge are completely safe and clearly visible. If you want to climb higher, stick to the obvious paths and firmly ignore anyone trying to grab your hand to help you.

Once they assist you up the rocks, they will aggressively demand a highly inflated fee, sometimes fifty dollars or more, for their unwanted help.
