Our boat captain in Mirissa chased a blue whale and got within 10 meters of it. It felt very wrong. Is this common and what can tourists do.

It is highly unethical and illegal under DWC laws, which mandate a 100-meter distance. Unfortunately, many rogue operators care more about tips than animal welfare. As a tourist, you hold the power. Yell at the captain to stop. Take photos of the boat name/registration, and post scathing reviews on TripAdvisor. Bad reviews are the only thing that hurts these scammers financially.

Report them to the local Tourist Police branch near the harbor as well.

I left a 1-star review for a company that did this and they begged me to take it down. Do not relent.
