I've heard about tuk-tuk scams. What should I watch out for and how do I stay safe?

Common issues include drivers taking you to shops or hotels where they get commission (instead of your requested destination), quoting inflated prices, or claiming places are closed to take you elsewhere. Always agree on the destination and price upfront. If a driver insists on taking you somewhere else or makes unexpected stops, firmly redirect them or get out. Using hotel-recommended drivers reduces these issues significantly. Some drivers may also try to sell you tours or services at inflated prices. Being polite but firm, and having a clear idea of where you're going, helps. Most drivers are honest and just trying to make a living, but a small number will try to take advantage if they think they can.
Agree on destination and price first. Be firm if a driver tries to take you somewhere else. Hotel-recommended drivers are usually more reliable.
