I keep hearing tuk-tuks driving slowly down the street blasting Für Elise. What are they selling?

That is the "Choon Paan" (Music Bread) truck! They are local mobile bakeries mounted on tuk-tuks. They play music to signal the neighborhood that they have fresh bread, spicy fish buns, and sweet pastries.

The fish buns (Malu Paan) are triangle-shaped and stuffed with a spicy potato and canned fish mix. Super delicious for a quick breakfast.

Just stand by the road and wave at them to stop. The pastries are baked fresh twice a day, usually doing rounds in the early morning and late afternoon.

Hearing that music instantly makes my mouth water. It is the Sri Lankan equivalent of an ice cream truck.

Stop them and buy a "Kimbula Banis" (crocodile bun). It is a long, sweet bread covered in sugar crystals. Best 20 cents you will ever spend.
