What is the difference between a "Rest House" and a Guesthouse?
I see places on Google Maps called "Government Rest House" or just "Rest House". Are tourists allowed to stay there?

Yes! Rest Houses are historical relics from the British colonial era. They were built for traveling officials. Many are now run by the government or leased to private companies. They usually have the absolute best locations in a town (right on the lake or overlooking ruins), though the rooms can sometimes feel a bit dated.
Fascinating, I will try to book one in Polonnaruwa. Thanks for the history lesson.
They are famous for serving excellent, traditional Sri Lankan Rice and Curry. Even if you don't sleep there, stopping at a provincial Rest House for lunch is a great idea.
