What is Wood Apple juice and is it safe to drink?
I keep seeing vendors selling a thick, brown juice called "Divul" or Wood Apple. It smells very strange. What does it taste like and is it safe for a foreigner's stomach?

Wood Apple is a local superfruit! The smell is pungent (like blue cheese or overripe fruit), but the juice is delicious. It tastes like a mix of tamarind, raisins, and citrus. They blend it with milk and jaggery (palm sugar). It is perfectly safe and very good for digestion.
It is definitely an acquired taste. My first sip shocked me, but by the end of the glass, I was hooked. Just ask them to make it without ice if you are worried about the tap water.
Okay, ordering without ice is a great tip. I will be brave and try it tomorrow!
