I am bringing US dollars and Euros to exchange for local rupees. Should I exchange at the airport, banks, hotels, or independent money changers to get the best possible rate.

Licensed independent money changers in Colombo Fort and Pettah offer the absolute best exchange rates significantly better than airports, banks, or hotels. Look for shops displaying the blue and white official Central Bank authorization sign. Rates can differ by as much as three percent between exchange counters so always compare at least three different shops before making large exchanges. Airport rates are typically the worst so only exchange a small amount there for immediate taxi and food expenses.

Always bring crisp clean notes without any tears, stains, or pen marks as damaged foreign currency is often rejected or heavily discounted. One hundred dollar bills usually get slightly better rates than smaller denominations. Count your rupees carefully at the counter before leaving as short changing does occasionally happen. Keep the official receipt in case you need to convert leftover rupees back at the airport when departing.
