Should I exchange all my money at the airport when I land, or use ATMs, or find local jewelry shops in the cities?

The exchange booths at Colombo Airport actually offer very fair, government-regulated rates that are almost identical to bank rates in the city. It is perfectly fine to exchange a large chunk there. Otherwise, using ATMs from Commercial Bank or HNB is easy and reliable.

Some jewelry shops in Colombo (Pettah area) or Galle give slightly higher rates for crisp $100 bills, but the airport is so much more convenient and safe. Just use the airport and ATMs.
