I want to buy a beautiful Batik dress, but I want to make sure it is handmade by locals, not factory printed. Any trusted shops?

The government-run "Laksala" shops in Colombo and Kandy guarantee authenticity and fair prices to artisans. If you want high fashion, look for "Buddhi Batiks" in Colombo—it is expensive but world-class designer quality.

Jezza Batiks near Kandy is great. They let you walk through the workshop in the back and see the women applying the wax and dyeing the fabrics by hand.

Check the reverse side of the fabric. Real batik will have the pattern vividly on BOTH sides. Factory prints are usually faded or white on the inside.

That fabric check tip is brilliant. I will definitely look at the reverse side before buying.
