I want to buy gifts but avoid mass-produced junk or shops that exploit artisans. Any good places or initiatives?

Look for 'Good Market' in Colombo (they have pop-ups too), 'Selyn' for ethical handloom, 'Lakshmi' or small cooperatives in Galle Fort area, and community projects in villages. Many guesthouses can connect you directly with local artisans (batik, wood carving, spices, tea). Ask 'who made this?' and buy from places that can tell you. Avoid the big gem and souvenir shops that cater only to cruise ship tourists.

The best souvenirs are often things locals actually use - good quality tea, spices, handloom items, or even a proper coconut shell spoon set from a market. Supporting small family businesses directly is more impactful than big 'craft' shops.

Good Market and direct artisan connections noted. Will prioritize that.
