I read the rip currents can be deadly. Which beaches have calm water safe for wading and swimming in February?

Unawatuna is a protected horseshoe bay and is very calm. Dalawella (Wijaya Beach) has a natural reef that creates a swimming pool-like lagoon. Mirissa is okay on the far left side, but the rest has strong shore break.

Avoid Tangalle for swimming! It is breathtakingly beautiful, but the undercurrent is brutal. You can only dip your feet in.

Polhena Beach in Matara is also excellent for swimming. It is protected by a reef and is where locals take their children to swim safely.

Hiriketiya is great for swimming in the middle of the bay, but watch out for beginner surfers losing their boards.
