I heard wild elephants sometimes stand on the roads at night. Is it safe to drive a scooter from Dambulla to Sigiriya after dinner?

Do not drive a scooter at night in that area. The Dambulla-Sigiriya-Habarana triangle is an elephant corridor. Wild elephants frequently cross or stand on the dark roads. They are easily spooked by headlights and scooters. Take a tuk-tuk or car at night; the drivers know how to handle encounters.

Second this. We were in a tuk-tuk and a massive bull elephant was just standing in the middle of the road eating branches. The driver turned off the engine and headlights and we waited in silence for 10 minutes until it passed. On a scooter, you would be incredibly vulnerable.
