A homestay near Wilpattu offered to cook us local wild venison (deer) for dinner. Is it legal to hunt and eat deer from the national park buffer zones.

Absolutely NOT. All deer species in Sri Lanka are protected. Poaching inside or near national parks is a severe criminal offense. Often, scammers will slaughter a stray dog or a goat and tell tourists it is "wild venison" to charge exorbitant prices. Do not eat it, and consider reporting the homestay to the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

Stick to the freshwater lake fish. It is delicious, legal, and supports the local fishermen safely.

If police raid the homestay while you are eating poached meat, you will be arrested alongside the owners.

Only indigenous communities have very specific, limited hunting rights, but they do not run commercial tourist homestays in Wilpattu.

This is horrible. You go to a national park to appreciate the wildlife, not eat it.
