Seeing Instagram "1 USD = 400 rupees" from 2023. What is the actual rate this week? Do shops even want USD? ATM fees?

CBSL on 20 Aug: buying about LKR 326, selling about 335 per USD. Banks that day were in a similar 326-337 band. You will not get 400. Most daily life is rupees. Fancy hotels may take USD at a bad rate. Commercial / Sampath / HNB ATMs take Visa. Always choose LKR on the screen, refuse the conversion. Flat ATM fee often LKR 200-300 plus your home bank. Airport booth is the worst rate we see.

Carry small notes, 100 / 500 / 1,000, for tuks and hoppers. A 5,000 gets side-eye at a kade.
