If we are driving our tuk-tuk on a rural road and encounter a wild elephant crossing on one side, and a village Buddhist procession on the other, who has the right of way.

The elephant always has the ultimate right of way. Stop your vehicle immediately, turn off the engine, and wait. The village procession will also stop and wait silently until the elephant passes into the jungle. In Sri Lanka, wildlife dictates the flow of traffic on rural roads, regardless of cultural events.

The drummers in the procession will immediately stop playing. Loud noises can provoke a charge. Just follow the lead of the locals and stay quiet.

Never try to squeeze your tuk-tuk past an elephant just because you see a gap. They can pivot and crush your vehicle in seconds.
