8-hour night bus to A-Bay or blow USD 80 on a car?
Land 16:00, do not want a Negombo night. Seeing AC buses Pettah/Bastian Mawatha toward Pottuvil/A-Bay. Is that safe-ish with a big pack in August?

Yes, the night / late intercity buses to Pottuvil / Panama run in season. Cheap. Most intercity buses are coins locally, longer tourist-coast runs more like USD 2-8, that is a range not a timetable. AC private buses exist and cost more. Bags go in the hold, sit near them if you can. Roads are better than they were, still a long bouncy night. Tell your A-Bay host the bus, they will send a tuk for LKR 500-800 from the stop. Agree that on WhatsApp before you board.
Took a 22:00, arrived sunrise, tuk to the hostel, surfed at 8. Earplugs. Solo women I met preferred a van share or sitting up front.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
