It is generally safe, but there are a few things to watch out for. First, pickpockets operate heavily on crowded buses, so wear your daypack on your chest. Second, the drivers drive very aggressively through the mountain switchbacks. Hold on tight if you are standing. Try to catch the AC highway bus instead; it costs a few dollars more but guarantees a seat and is much safer.

If you have large 70L backpacks, the red buses will charge you for an extra passenger seat. It is standard policy.

Good advice, we will try to get train tickets first before resorting to the bus.

Take the train instead! It is safer, more comfortable, and the views are infinitely better.
