A driver near the lake told us the Three Temples loop would cost 8000 rupees because of steep roads. Is this a scam.

That is a massive overcharge. The Three Temples loop (Gadaladeniya, Lankatilaka, Embekke) is outside town, but a fair negotiated rate for a half-day trip including waiting time is around 3500 to 4500 LKR. Drivers parked directly at the lake or Temple of the Tooth always quote double or triple. Walk a few streets away to negotiate.

Just ask your hotel to book someone they trust. Saves the haggling headache.

It is hilly, but that is Kandy. It does not justify an 8000 rupee fare.

He was very persistent about the steep roads ruining his engine.

We used the PickMe app to get to the first temple, then just grabbed a local village tuktuk for the rest.

They will also try to stop at a spice garden on the way. Refuse to get out if they do.
